Good Privacy Practices Make Good Business Sense

On January 1, 2004 the final phase of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) became law and established new privacy rules to recognize the rights of individuals with respect to the collection, use, disclosure and retention of their personal information.

Ten Privacy Principles

PIPEDA is based on the following ten privacy principles:
• Accountability
• Identify purpose of collection
• Obtain consent
• Limit collection
• Use and retention
• Accuracy
• Safeguards
• Openness
• Individual access
• Compliance

Where to Begin

To determine the significance of privacy related business risks, it is important for every organization to review how private information is managed, determine gaps and potential risks and develop and implement a privacy program.

From a business perspective, good privacy practices will enhance credibility and promote continued customer confidence. YPM has developed a PIPEDA review process which can be tailored to address the specific requirements and the unique circumstances of your business. We can assist you in addressing your privacy concerns to ensure that you are in compliance with PIPEDA.
